our softball manager/coach is comically hard-core. he yells at us, gets mad, and makes no effort to hide his disdain for women as softball players. and that is why the following email, which was circulated to all employees of the center where I work (>150), was so sweet.

All,
Our opening day game against Psychology was a see-saw battle played
out under an unsettled sky. The sky darkened as we first lost a
seven-run lead and then fell behind 14-11. But in the end, the
storm clouds passed and the Dreamers emerged with an extra-inning
15 to 14 victory.

Usually, an unwritten policy and modesty prevents mentioning the
names of specific players who play starring roles. Singling players
out can be difficult and can cause descension, even when done in
the most careful way.

However, given that the deserving player soon will be departing
the Center to assume a faculty position in Chicago, seeing as the
player will be with us for only two more games, and given the crucial
nature of her game-winning hard-hit RBI single, an exception can be
made and congratulations and a personalized acknowledgement
extended to Rachel ******.

see? it's very awesome.

Comments:
i'm glad you withheld your last name so creeps can't find you through the internet and come and kidnap you!
(that hit really was awesome! i should know i was your first base coach. you're welcome for the signal to 'rip it up'.

Kudos, Rachel.

thanks! you'll have to bring us in as ringers on your team once we're in IL.

Remember, If you take up softball after the move, you'll have to adjust to playing w/ a 16-inch ball. Chicago will have it no other way.

that and 3 inch deep pizzas.

I knew my husband would have already commented on this post. :) I am only sorry that he will never see such an email with my name in it. Congrats on your necessary-ness!
